I recently was lucky enough to be invited by Disney to catch
a sneak preview showing of the movie, Big Hero 6. I, like the rest of the
world, had been seeing previews and trailers/commercials for this movie for
quite some time and really wanted to check it out. When I received the email it
was a no brainer that I had to attend my first “early screening.”
One of the benefits of living in the New Jersey/New York
area is that I can go into the city pretty much whenever I please. The
screening was held at the AMC 25 and this is a massive movie theater. Any
theater that has you go up more than 2 escalators to get to your theater is
pretty big.
Disney provided us with a free popcorn and soda, which is
always good-free food. The movie wasn’t the only agenda Disney wanted to talk
about at the screening. They wanted to talk about how Hiro and Baymax, the
stars of the movie, will interact in Disney Infinity 2.0. The characters will
play just like they did in the movie such as Hiro will be able to control his
nanobots and Baymax will fight just like a robot who learns from downloading
kung-fu should!
Disney Infinity figures go that extra mile in terms of
detail and Big Hero 6 is no different. I know this because Disney gave everyone
in the theater their own Hiro and Baymax Disney Infinity figures, which will
look pretty sweet on my desk! It was tough to hear the presentation because a
lot of the people who attended brought their children to the screening. I’m not
saying that was a bad thing, it just made things a little hard to hear. Anyway,
on to the movie!
For starters, Big Hero 6 had a darker tone than what I was
expecting. You're introduced to Hiro in the underground robot fighting arena of
San Fransokyo where he wins easily, so much so that he played the king pin of
the fighting ring for a fool. Throw in Tadashi, his older
brother to get him out of practically any jam. They would do anything for each
other but would you expect anything less from brothers. If it wasn’t for
Tadashi inventing Baymax, a robotic health care provider, than Hiro and Baymax
would never have teamed up.
The look and feel of the movie are
fantastic and in 3D as well. While the team runs away from the masked “Kabuki
guy” in the streets of San Fransokyo, you really get the feeling that team
isn’t going to make it through this. Another example of great
graphics/animation is when Hiro and Baymax fly through the skies of San
Fransokyo. There is so much going on, action-wise, and all of it looks
fantastic!
If the writing doesn’t stand up, then
the movie will suffer. Luckily, Big Hero 6 doesn’t have that problem and
wonderfully written. The interaction between Hiro and Tadashi really makes you
think they really are brothers. The same could be said for the team, Big Hero
6. Their interaction makes you think they truly care for Hiro in his toughest
hour as well as spending all their time together at the college! Also how Hiro
and Baymax share a bond even though one is a robot was written very well too.
In a way, I see myself in Hiro, not
knowing what he wants in life and then working hard for something. I feel like
the way I came into writing is just like that. Anyway, now I can talk about
Fred, the Campus mascot by day and the Campus mascot by night! Fred loves
science but doesn’t match up with the others, mentally. He makes for that with
monster/comic smarts, which is vital in a super hero team. Combine that with
the fact that his family is wealthy and he spins signs! That combination isn’t
given to just anyone!
There are plenty of heart-felt moments
in the movie, but did you expect anything else from a Disney movie. I won’t
spoil them for you but I can give you one piece of information, stay through
the end credits, you won’t be disappointed!
Big Hero 6 screams family and values,
like friends. It shows you that you shouldn’t take family for granted because
you never know what could happen. The movie also shows that you shouldn’t waste
your natural abilities/gifts like Hiro was doing at the start of the film. I
think I’m in Hiro’s corner on the robot fighting front but then again I’m not a
robotics master. The animation, characters, and writing all show that Disney
hasn’t skipped a beat and still knows what people want to see in their film!
9/10
